Summary: Fifteen years ago she never thought that she would live to see this day and she was never more happy to be proven wrong.
Sap Warning!
A soft smile graced Buffy’s face as she watched her sister begin her first dance as a married woman.
Fifteen years ago she never thought that she would live to see this day and she was never more happy to be proven wrong. Dawn had grown from the annoying unwanted tagalong to a fully capable woman who was no longer just her sister, but also her best friend.
It had been a long, bumpy road to get to that point. Life had placed obstacle after obstacle in front of them and the fact that they were both extremely stubborn individuals didn’t help either. Their personalities clashed beyond reason at times and they would go months without speaking to each other, but never failed to pick up the phone when it would finally ring. In the end, Buffy didn’t regret a single step along the way. For without the fire the steel bonds that held them together would never have been tempered properly.
In a perfect world she would have been able to remove her sister from the threat of the supernatural; to protect her from the things that go bump in the night. The realist in her, however, knew that would never be possible. It wasn’t just the threat of being the sister of the longest living slayer, but just the simple fact of being human. The nasties never cared if you were in the know or not when choosing their next victim. Her sister cared too much about helping others to turn her back when she was able to do something about it; that, more than anything else, made Buffy so proud she could burst.
The man Dawn had ultimately decided to marry was fully acquainted with their world and worked closely with them on the research side of the fight. Not once had he ever asked Dawn to stay out of the field or displayed any resentment of her chosen profession. He truly accepted her for who she was and supported her in any way he possibly could. Did he worry when she was out? Of course, but he never let it interfere with their relationship. Buffy could not have hoped for a better man than this for her baby sister.
Surprisingly, Buffy had not felt the need to threaten or investigate him when Dawn had first brought him home to meet her. She could easily read the love they felt for each other in their eyes. As much as she wanted to deny it, her sister had grown up into a remarkable woman despite her auspicious beginnings.
Warm, strong arms wrapped themselves around Buffy and she let out a satisfied smile. “Gorgeous,” he whispered in her ear.
“I’ve never seen her look more beautiful,” Buffy agreed as her sister continued to dance.
“Oh, yes, the bride is, too,” he said with a teasing note, his hands running over the gentle swell of her stomach, the gold band on his ring finger glinting in the light.
Buffy shifted slightly in his arms to crane her neck up for a kiss. “You say the sweetest things.” Her sister hadn’t been the only one lucky enough to find the right man for her.
She was triply blessed for she had never truly believed she would live this long to see any of this become possible.
A/N: I left the men purposely vague. I typically write crossovers, but for once I wanted to leave the possibility of their perfect match being someone normal.

on 2013-03-21 02:07 am (UTC)I particularly liked: "For without the fire the steel bonds that held them together would never have been tempered properly." Fantastic work with that one.
