Strange Town
“Dude, what are we doing here?” Sam asked scanning the crowd of oddly mixed people. There were high school students easily mixing with what appeared to be college aged students, and even those who seemed a bit too old to be going out to the local club. Which begged to question, what were they doing there when Dean absolutely detested this kind of place.
“Drinking beer,” Dean said with a smirk before taking a long draw off his own beer.
Sam's face screwed up in a visage of exasperation that only Dean seemed capable of bringing out of him and had to resist the urge to hit his brother. “I meant Sunnydale. You know this place is off limits to all hunters.”
Dean huffed and set his beer down on the bar. “I've got seven months left and I'm gonna do all the crazy ass stuff I've wanted to do over the years. Dad would never tell us why we had to avoid this place and it's bugged the hell out of me ever since we were kids.”
“So, this is like a rebellion towards dad.”
“No, just fulfilling a curiosity. And did you notice the number of cemeteries as we drove through town? I'm not leaving until -” The sound of nearby arguing cut Dean off as he turned to assess the problem.
The blonde, though tiny, seemed to have the situation well in hand and he was just about to turn back to Sam when she threw a punch that caused the guy she was arguing with to take a step back. When the guy turned back to her, his face was distorted and his eyes were yellow. Surprisingly enough, the girl didn't seem to be shocked by the change. What was with this town?
“Damn it,” Dean muttered and rose off of his barstool to help the poor girl out. From the looks of it, she seemed tough, but he wasn't leaving her alone to fight off a vampire. Especially not a Billy Idol wannabe.
He reached the couple just as the vampire's face shifted back to his human one. “Nice trick,” he said, stepping between them and giving the vampire a hard shove. “Do that at all the parties?”
Billy Idol wannabe glared hard at him, but Dean grew up under the stern stare of John Winchester and it rolled off of him like water on a duck. “Listen, mate, Summers and I were just having -” The guy started with a rough British accent.
“Don't really care,” Dean said with a shrug before slamming his fist into the vampire's face.
To his surprise, the tiny blonde grabbed him by the arm and swung him around to face her. He forced himself not to wince at the strength of her grip.
“What the hell do you think you're doing?” She asked, not letting go as he tried to maneuver out of her grip.
“Listen, lady. This guy isn't your friend,” Dean started.
“Never said he was,” she said shoving him away from her and the vampire. Dean stumbled back into Sam who briefly reached out to steady him. “But this is a private conversation so go away.”
“I'm afraid we can't,” Sam said, stepping around his brother. “Really, this guy isn't who he seems.”
The young woman nearly growled, “I know that. Now, I really need for you to back off. Spike and I have a small matter that needs settling and you two are in the way.”
“The only way it's going to end, sweetheart, is with your death. He's a frickin' vampire!” Dean shouted back at her, moving around Sam to step into her personal space.
“How observant of you!” She yelled, shoving him once again.
Sam stepped between them and had barely placed one hand on her shoulder when Spike punched him. “Hands off!”
The girl rolled her eyes, “Really, Spike, I can take care of... What's wrong with your chip?” She asked, suddenly turning her steely glare on him.
“I dunno, Slayer. Let me check,” he said then, moving faster than anything Dean had ever seen, reached out and pinched him. As Dean cried out, the vampire cried out as well and the palm of his hand met his own forehead as his face scrunched up. “Still working.”
“Which means,” the girl said slowly as she moved to study Sam, “you're not human.”
“What? I'm human!” Sam argued.
“Nope, can't be. Spike here can only harm demons. You didn't set his chip off, which means you aren't who you appear to be.”
“Whoa, sister!” Dean said, stepping between her and his brother. This was definitely getting out of hand. “I can guarantee you that he's my brother and all human, unlike your friend there.”
“And I'm telling you that he's not human. I think you've been tricked. Maybe I should just rescue you from the evil disguising itself as your brother,” she countered.
She stepped into Dean's personal space and even though she was nearly a foot shorter than himself, he found himself oddly intimidated. His blood ran hot. “No one messes with my brother.”
“And no one messes with Spike,” she said coolly.
“Except for her,” the vampire in question said, bouncing lightly on his toes.
“Except for me,” she agreed, not moving an inch. “How about, you go back to your beer and Spike and I go back to our argument, and we forget this whole thing ever happened.”
Dean hated to let the vampire go, but something in her eyes said that she could become dangerous if he pushed things. Dad had always warned them that Sunnydale was way too dangerous, even for hunters and that it was to be avoided at all costs. He was beginning to see his point.
“Sounds good,” Dean said with a nod, keeping his voice as manly as possible. “Let's go, Sam.” Then walked toward the door without checking to see if he was following.
“Dean, did you hear what he called her?” Sam asked once they exited the club.
“Not really, why?”
“I think that was the vampire slayer.”
Dean snorted. “Oh, please, Sammy. First off, the slayer is a myth. And secondly, why would a vampire slayer let a vampire live? Let's blow this place, it gives me the creeps.”
