A Bold New World

Tony strode through the bullpen towards the small hallway and the door at the end of it. If he had correctly followed the directions from the desk sergeant on the first floor, it should be his desired destination. He surreptitiously looked around the room, studying the men and women working.

No one had given him a clear explanation just what Special Investigations did within the Chicago Police Department, but from the looks of it, they were not high on the funding list. The computers looked like aging dinosaurs compared to the ones they used at NCIS and the mixture of cops ranged from extremely fresh-faced rookies to men who were well passed their prime. For a department that was on the fringes of the city, they figured awfully heavy in the report he had read.

He managed to make it to the door without causing a stir and paused briefly to wonder at the nameplate. One was obviously new to lead one to believe the head of SI was newly promoted. And yet, underneath the shiny nameplate was an old, dirty piece of masking tape with the same name on it. Tony was finding himself intrigued by this whole situation beyond what was written in the FBI report.

This wouldn't be the first time he'd met a woman with the ability and the ambition to reach a position of authority within what was still something of a boy's club, and he had a feeling that she wouldn't be much different from the others - a no-nonsense sort of woman with no sense of humor or desire to look feminine. She'd try her best to be “one of the boys” with a low tolerance of people who even remotely resembled him.

Tony mentally braced himself before stepping into the frame of the open door and knocking on the wooden surface. The woman on the other side of the door was nothing like he had expected. A blonde with stylish yet punkish short hair and stunning blue eyes looked up from her computer screen. Her eyes coolly regarded him as she asked, “Can I help you?”

“I certainly hope so,” Tony said, his most charming smile tugging at his lips. “I'm Special Agent Tony DiNozzo of NCIS, that's - “

“Naval Criminal Investigative Service, I've heard of you,” she said blandly.

“Great! Finally, someone with intelligence,” he nearly crowed. It was extremely rare that anyone had heard of the agency outside of the Marines and the Navy.

She ignored him and asked, “What can I do for NCIS?”

“Well, Lt. Murphy, can I call you Karrin?”

“Lt. Murphy will do just fine,” she said, frowning slightly at him. “I'm rather busy so if you could hurry this along.”

“Of course!” Tony said brightly, not letting the brush off affect him and sitting in one of the chairs opposite of her. “I'm just doing some follow up on a report made by the FBI. We have a victim with similar injuries to a past case and we're just seeing if we can find any leads.”

Karrin Murphy's frown grew deeper. “Which case would this be?”

Tony opened one of the manila file folders in his hands. “Two years ago, lead FBI agent was a Denton, main suspect was Harley MacFinn, both ended up dead.” He swore he saw Murphy's face go white at just the few short details. Good. Meant she knew something that wasn't in the report.

“Why ask me? The FBI report is complete,” she said, her voice never betraying her. Already, color had returned to her face as if it had never left.

Tony shook his head. “Something about this report doesn't add up, ring true. Boss man has a rule about it – don't believe what you're told, always double check. We're worried that someone may have escaped your notice on this case and is now killing in DC. We just want to make sure we've covered everything.”

“And mutant wolves don't figure into your equation?” She asked, studying him carefully, her blue eyes boring into him.

He fought the urge to fidget under her stare. No one else could produce such an effect in him except for Gibbs. “Not ones that just suddenly disappear after some FBI agents go loco and a huge shoot out on a mob guys property. Plus, the forensics just don't add up. And if our specialist says something is hinky, then I believe her.”

Murphy's lips twisted into an almost smile at his use of the word hinky before falling back into a neutral position. “Do you have your file with you? Maybe I'll see something that might help.”

“Sure,” he said handing over a different manila folder. “It's just death related mostly, some of the stuff is classified so it's left out for obvious reasons.”

She nodded as she opened the meager file. “How did you come across the old FBI case?” She asked, already perusing the details.

Tony was impressed at how she didn't blink at the gruesome images he knew that file contained. It had been a bad one, even for a seasoned investigator like himself. Probie had been lucky not to lose his lunch over this one as well, although he had looked decidedly green the entire time they had processed the scene.

“Our ME and forensic analyst ran their data through the system just in case. There were some anomalies in their own findings that they couldn't explain – the teeth marks matching no known species, claw marks too far apart.”

Again she nodded, absorbing the information as she turned pages. After several minutes she closed the folder and handed it back to him. Silently, she pushed her chair back slightly in order to open the middle drawer of her desk. She dug around for a moment before finding what she was looking for. “Call this man,” she said grimly, handing over a business card, the edges well worn.

He read the name, then start laughing. “A wizard? Surely you can't be serious.”

Murphy's blue eyes were tired and world heavy as she calmly said, “Very. Harry is the only one who can help you.”

Tony wanted to continue laughing, but something about her stopped him. The Lieutenant was good at her job, and nobody's fool. He looked at the card again and realized that the card was in poor condition, not because of age or from being thrown into a drawer, but because it had been well used. This was someone she relied on.

Instead, he asked, “He'll know what's going on?”

“He'll stop it for you,” she said, sitting back in her chair just this side of sagging into it. “Harry will be the only one who can. You are out of your league on this, if it's what I think it is.”

“And what is it?” Tony asked, truly curious.

“A loup-garou, a type of werewolf, only much, much nastier. A lot of good people died the last time because of all sorts of mistakes made on all sides, but a lot more are alive because of Harry. He'll know how to find out who did this and what to do to make it safe for everyone again.”

Tony felt that insane laughter threaten to escape again. Werewolves. This was beyond insane. Something from Probie's wet dreams.

“And none of this appeared in the report because...” he prompted her.

An eyebrow raised in surprise. “Would you have believed the report if it had?”

He frowned and thought it over. It would explain why there seemed to be huge, gaping holes in the report. But werewolves? Then again, it wouldn't hurt to check this guy out. They had nothing else to go on.

“Thank you, Lt. Murphy,” he said, rising from his chair. “I'll see where this goes.”

“All I can tell you is trust him. And I'm sorry.”

“For what?”

“Because your world is never going to be the same again,” she said, a sad little smile on her lips.
