Setting: Takes place right after Homecoming of Stargate and three years after Chosen.
Summary: When someone close to Buffy dies, she finds herself on Jack’s doorstep. Before long, events and emotions pull them into something greater than they ever imagined.

Epilogue

Buffy sat dejectedly on the bed in the infirmary as she and Dave waited for the doctor to return. The CMO, Dr. Brightman, was still fairly new to the SGC, having only been there for three weeks, but he was Janet's permanent replacement. So she had filled him in on her peculiarities shortly after his arrival.

She looked over at Dave who was sitting in the chair next to the bed working on his new paperwork. With Jack still frozen he was now the highest ranking military person on base, which meant new duties. None of which he cared for. He had complained several times about all the paperwork he was required to complete and how he couldn't figure out how Jack had found time to complete it and play video games.

“Any word from the Asgard yet?” She asked.

“No,” he said shortly, scratching a comment in one of the fields of the report.

“What's taking so long?” She complained. “It's been over a month since... since Jack was put into deep freeze. I thought these guys were supposed to be our allies.”

“They are. You gotta remember they're in that other galaxy and fighting off the Replicators,” he replied absently.

“I get that, but still. I thought they liked Jack,” she muttered, crossing her arms. It didn't seem fair that the world was moving forward while Jack was in some sort of weird Ancient hibernation waiting for the Asgard to come and remove all that knowledge from his head.

Dave waited a few moments before asking, “How's SG-1? Haven't had a chance to talk to them much.”

Buffy sighed and turned her attention to the white cotton sheet. She picked at some imaginary fuzz as she answered, “Good. Daniel seems a little lost sometimes that Jack isn't walking into his office to bug him, but they're holding up.”

“Understandable. Jack had a tendency to make his presence known,” Dave said, wearily rubbing his face.

She watched him through her lashes. It had taken some time to build the trust back with Dave and the rest of her team, but things were slowly getting better, not as good as they were, but better. However, Dave had seemed to have aged ten years over the past month between his new duties and taking care of his team.

“Been by to see Simon lately?” He asked.

“Yeah,” she said with a small smile, lifting her head up to look him fully in the eye. “I still can't believe they had a girl instead of a boy.”

“I've had some practice looking at those sonogram pictures and I knew,” he said with a chuckle.

“She's beautiful,” Buffy said a little wistfully. She had never given much thought to the idea of having kids since she didn't expect to live that long, but seeing how happy Simon and Marci were with their new daughter made her wish that one day she'd have the same opportunity.

“Janet Anne, it's a good name,” Dave said a little gruffly.

“It is,” she agreed. An uncomfortable silence fell over them as both of their thoughts retreated back to that day and the weeks following. They hadn't talked about it much other than to address her issues with trust and shouldering responsibility that didn't belong to her. But to be honest, she didn't know what to say to anyone about it. They had all loved Janet and keenly felt her absence.

While intellectually she knew she couldn't save everyone, a fact that Dave had been drilling into her head lately, her heart had problems believing it. A small part of her still felt responsible for Janet's death.

She closed her eyes and let her head fall back against the raised bed with a groan. “What is taking so long? I just want to get out of here. I didn't want to come down here in the first place.”

“Summers, you could be sick. I know those problems you've been having don't seem like much, but they could be a sign of a more serious problem.”

“I don't get sick, Dave. I'm the slayer. Ever since I was chosen I've been sick a grand total of two times. So believe me when I tell you that I'm not sick,” she stated stubbornly.

He leveled her with a flat gaze. “You've been throwing up for the past two weeks, been getting fatigued despite that endless energy you seem to have, you've had headaches, and you've lost some weight. Don't think I haven' noticed.”

“You keep an eye on my weight?” She asked.

“No, but Sharon mentioned it. Doesn't change the facts though.”

“Okay, so I might have a touch of the flu. It doesn't explain why I had to come here to the infirmary instead of going to a doctor's office,” she said with a glare.

Dave rolled his eyes at her. “You know the reason. Once you started working here they have to take care of all of your medical needs. You could have picked up something off-world.”

“Off-world?” She said, one eyebrow rising. “I haven't been off-world since Anubis attacked and I never left the ship.”

“It could have been incubating,” Dave pointed out, looking back to his paperwork.

Dr. Brightman chose that moment to return, effectively putting an end to the mini-argument. “Miss Summers, I am pleased to inform you that your tests came back clear of any viruses or bacteria, human or alien.”

“See,” Buffy told Dave with a triumphant look.

He ignored her and asked, “Then why has she been off her game for the past few weeks.”

“That's easily explained. She's about one-month pregnant.”

A/N: Before you even start to protest, yes, there will be a sequel. However, don't expect to see it anytime soon. I've got a couple of one-shots I want to write before I start on it. Plus, the holidays are coming up, and my new job in retail is gonna suck the life out of me. But yes, there will be a sequel.
