Retail is tough, and I never thought I could do it either since stupid people irritate the crap out of me. But my theatre background suits me well, I just 'play the role' of a sales person half the time. It's not too bad when I get to have fun and really help the customers shop for gifts and whatnot. Plus, we get enough regular customers who I adore that it balances out the asshats.

Ever since I took over the hiring two years ago, it never ceases to amaze me how lazy people are in regards to trying to get a job. They won't fill out all of the application, leaving references blank, typos galore. Want to work 40 hour work weeks but have extremely limited availibility. Think I'm gonna pay them $10 an hour when we are sitting in the lowest pay band in the country. *shakes head* People are just morons.

Granted I didn't have an actual job until I graduated from college, but by then I had a work ethic. My parents required me to do things to help out around the house ever since I was little. I was in the band in high school and the band director had strict rules about attendance. During concert band season if you missed five practices you were not allowed to perform. In college my schedule was so full I couldn't squeeze in an actual job. I'd have class in the morning, work in the workshop during the afternoon, have one-act rehearsal in the late afternoon, and then usually a main stage rehearsal for three hours in the evening. But I was learning all aspects of theatre, many times have a design position and acting role in the same show and required to deliver. So my work ethic was there, just not actual work experience.

*shrugs* And I don't always look at work experience when I hire. Yes, it's nice, but I also know that just because you don't have formal experience doesn't mean you can't get the job done. Heck, I've hired quite a few who this would be their first job and they've been wonderful employees who got the job done. Which then just amazes me the idiots who do have experience and yet just completely suck. /rant *grins*

*hugs* Well wishes to you and yours as well!
